Biddy Baxter
1933 – 2025
Biddy Baxter was an enthusiastic member of The Conservation Foundation’s Board and Council for several years and active in its projects especially those involving young people. Biddy took on the role of judging a number of our award schemes very seriously, often providing detailed reasons for her decisions. She had first met David Bellamy when she was a student at Durham University, and I think he was somewhat wary of my suggestion to invite her to join our Board. Blue Peter had been such a fundamental part of ‘growing up’ for so many that having her support and involvement was a real benefit to us. It was no surprise that within hours of returning to the UK after his brief jail sentence for his campaign against the Franklyn River Dam that DB found himself giving his first media interview live in the Blue Peter studio.

Biddy Presenting a Foundation Award
Biddy was also an excellent board member with quite strong views on some of my ideas and suggestions. However, she was extremely kind and incredibly supportive on many occasions. She regularly arrived at the Foundation’s office with tins of biscuits for us all to celebrate the festive season.
Despite the onset of old age, Biddy would keep in touch continuing to support with helpful suggestions and sending kind Christmas messages to the family up until the end.
I am sure that she would approve of the Foundation celebrating over 40 years of a wide variety of activities by wanting to concentrate on supporting those wishing to undertake studies to fulfil a role in conserving the planet in a variety of ways.
