Olivia Newton-John
The Conservation Foundation was very sad to hear of the passing of Olivia Newton John.
Olivia was one of a number of celebrities who supported the Foundation’s Big Bird Race organised to raise awareness of the effects of long line fishing which was responsible for the deaths of thousands of seabirds including an estimated 100,000 albatrosses.
The race held in 2004 involved fitting small transmitters to young birds prior to them leaving their nesting grounds in Tasmania and heading out on their flights towards the Indian Oceans.
Olivia named her bird Xanadu which was one of 18 birds taking part in the race which was won by an albatross ‘owned’ by Jerry Hall.
